Why Identical Filters in Different Parts of the City Require Different Maintenance

Two identical filters installed in different buildings can become clogged at different rates. Their service life is affected by the condition of the building’s internal pipes, the amount of mechanical impurities in the water, water hardness, and overall consumption. That is why Ecosoft water filters in Dnipro should be serviced not only according to a fixed schedule, but also with regard to the actual water supply conditions in a particular apartment.

How the Condition of Pipes Affects Filter Cartridges

After centralized treatment, water travels through the municipal water supply network and then through the internal plumbing of the building. In old metal pipes, corrosion products can form and enter the water together with fine sediment.

A polypropylene cartridge is the first element to trap these particles. If there is a large amount of rust in the building’s plumbing, or if sediment appears in the water after maintenance work on the municipal network, the cartridge pores fill up more quickly. In another part of the city, the same cartridge may maintain normal flow capacity for much longer.

The condition of the plumbing can also be assessed by observing how the filter operates. Rapid darkening of the mechanical cartridge, a noticeable drop in water pressure, and visible sediment inside the filter housing indicate a high load on the first filtration stage.

Why Water Hardness Also Matters

A mechanical cartridge does not remove dissolved calcium and magnesium salts, but water hardness still affects the overall water treatment setup. If white limescale regularly appears on kettles and plumbing fixtures, mechanical filtration alone is not enough.

A reverse osmosis system may be used for drinking water, while a separate water softening system can be installed to treat the entire water supply in an apartment or house. The type of equipment depends on where hardness needs to be reduced and how much water is consumed each day.

Several factors influence how often a filter requires maintenance:

  • the amount of rust, sand, and other sediment in the water supply;
  • the condition of pipes inside the building;
  • the hardness and overall composition of the incoming water;
  • daily water consumption;
  • the type and rated service life of the installed cartridges.

Even when the same filter model is used, the combination of these factors can vary significantly. As a result, a cartridge designed by the manufacturer for a certain service interval may need to be replaced earlier under specific operating conditions.

When It Is Time to Replace the Cartridge

The color of the filter material alone does not provide complete information about its condition. A mechanical cartridge may quickly turn brown because of rust while still maintaining normal water flow.

A more reliable sign is a noticeable drop in water pressure after the filter. In a flow-through system, the drinking water flow rate may also decrease if the cartridges have become heavily loaded with contaminants. At the same time, the actual service period should be compared with the recommendations for the specific filter model.

Carbon cartridges remove chlorine and organic compounds, so their appearance does not indicate their remaining service life as clearly as it does with mechanical cartridges.
